| Plot Overview | This relatively short anime is set in a fantasy world within a city surrounded by high walls named Glie. Here, humans work and with "angels" called Haibane (they have wings and a halo, so they're basically angels), who are said to bring good fortune and are governed by the Haibane Renmei, the main authority figure of the town. One day, a newborn arrives in a cocoon and hatches. Out comes the main protagonist of the series, Rakka. Each of the major Haibane characters in the group have names which reflect their dream that they had before they were born. Rakka means "falling", as seen is the beginning seconds of the series. Other characters include Reki (small stones), Nemu (Sleeping), Hikari (Light), Kuu (Air), and Kana (river fish). They live in an abandoned campus which is referred to as Old Home and all the Haibane work in the nearby business district regularly. The anime follows the group of Haibane through their routine activities, and the development of the main character within the new world. |
| Thoughts/Opinions | This is a somewhat obscure anime, but it is quite good for it's length. It's almost a slice-of-life type of anime in that it seems to follow that path early on, but when things get a little strange, some conflict will come into play. For those of you who cannot live without action, I'd take like 15 points off the rating, because I will come out and say it now, there is VERY little, if any, action in the series. It's more of a thought/character driven series. The Character design is excellent and the story is quite touching, to say the least, even if it doesn't emerge immediately. The music isn't all that outstanding, except for that awesome piano piece near the end of the series at the climax. That piece is quite good, and if I could find a score for it, I'd definitely try to learn it. All in all, it's a good series, just don't expect much in the action department.
Oh, and if you were ever in doubt, the entire main cast is female, despite how "tomboyish" some of them might look. |
