| Plot Overview | This anime takes place in Tokyo, Japan, in a time not unlike the present, but everybody harbors the ability to use magic. In this society, a person's worth is heavily dependent on how many times he or she can cast magic, known as a spell count, which in turn, decreases by one every time magic is used. The protagonist, Shikimori Kuzuki, attends a prestigious school of magic called Aoi Institute, which houses some of the most gifted magicians all over Japan. However he is often mocked there because of his ridiculously low spell count of 8, while the average is about 100, and in the school, ridiculously high, up to the 10,000s. This makes everybody at the school question why he is there in the first place. However, one day, a girl, Miyama Yuna, shows up claiming Kazuki to be her husband. At the same time, another popular girl from school, Kazetsubaki Kuriko, seems determined to come after him, and finally, Kamishiro Rin, shows up and aims to get rid of Kazuki. Soon thereafter, it is revealed that Kazuki's spell count is ridiculously low due to a lineage of non-outstanding magicians. However, that power is long overdue, and lies dormant within his genes, and as such, even though he has 8 casts remaining, his magic remains among the most powerful ever known. He instantly becomes a celebrity in school as every female magician (and there are a lot of them) goes after him, but focusing on Rin, Kuriko, and Yuna.

| Thoughts/Opinions | Holy crap, this anime is AMAZING. Like, really amazing. The OP is good, the ED is decent, and the storyline is extremely deep, with some comedy to punch in between the drama. Several plot twists keep the plot nice and unpredictable. The characters themselves are developed and lovably cute. This isn't quite Pita Ten level cuteness, because all the characters are in Middle School. The music isn't bad and is somewhat memorable, so it's distinguished, in comparison to most other series. The graphics are pretty clean and they look pretty good, despite being in traditional 4:3 screen size. I will have to post a nosebleed warning here. There seems to be a fair amount of fanservice of the girls posted throughout the anime, especially with random underwear shots and probably some of the most unnaturally huge and bouncy breasts on Kuriko I have ever seen. Motoko of Love Hina also seems to be back playing the character of Rin, which, if you've seen through all of Love Hina, it's like deja vu at one point in the anime. I also wasn't sure where to put this, but I eventually decided Fantasy because Magic was the biggest part of it, even though there are healthy doses of Drama and Romance and Comedy involved. I'd have to argue the magical girl genre, but that's what I found on both Wikipedia AND Anime News Network.
I can't give it a perfect score though. I loved every part of it, but it just felt too short, despite it bearing a common length of 24 episodes. I don't know, I suppose I was just expecting more. I still wish it had more. But maybe that's just me. I thought it was just awesome. I also finished the bulk of it in one day, oddly enough. I started watching last night, but I only got through about 3 episodes before I went to bed. I woke up this morning and watched the remaining 21 episodes, even though I was supposed to stop at the half way point of episode 12. Ironically, that's when the biggest plot twist I've ever seen occurred. I won't spoil it though. ^.^ |
